Twenty-three years old. Two months on the desk. He had not counted anybody yet and I intended to keep it that way.

I counted the stubs before I covered them and I counted them again after. One short. And there had been exactly two of us in the room.

She had taken a blank ticket and she had not told me. I decided she was frightened. I had been counting people for four nights and I had still not counted her.
