The address on the cigarette packet was a temple older than the road that reached it.

The old teaching had a name for it. A hunger that keeps a tally — because somebody, a very long time ago, was kind enough to teach it to count.

Nobody had touched the rope. Nobody was near the belfry. The bell rang once, the way a name is written once.

They had asked an old man where the ninth floor went, and in answering he had read the list aloud in his own temple. It had followed them up the canal. A wat, in the end, is only another building that keeps names.
