The Empress Who Balanced the Ledger
Chapter 14 · free to read
Nineteen days inside. They gave me a room, a clerk, a brazier and a robe with crimson at the cuff, and every morning I put it on and became a woman the whole palace had stopped speaking to.
There it was, in a locked room a hundred paces from where I had been forbidden to look for it: eleven authorisations, chopped with the household seal of the late emperor's brother. Not evidence of a partnership. Evidence of an owner.
Refusal was death. Agreement was death nine days later, when the court's own gate-tallies contradicted a forgery in my hand. So I did the only thing left: I made it a technical problem.
I could not carry paper out through a Bureau gate. But a counter may carry her rods anywhere, and a rod-set laid out wrongly is only untidy — unless the woman reading it also counts for a living.
